Economics is the study of how people, businesses, and societies choose to use scarce resources. Resources such as time, money, land, labor, and materials are limited, but human wants are not. There is never enough of everything for everyone, which is why choices are necessary. The real cost of something is what you give up to get it. Demand is how much of a good people want to buy at each price. Supply is how much sellers are willing to offer. When demand rises and supply stays the same, prices tend to go up. People respond to rewards and penalties. A higher wage encourages more work, and a tax on cigarettes discourages smoking.
